A father, 40 and his 20-year-old son, were arrested for allegedly
assaulting two men, both aged 58, at a farm on the old Koster road near
Swartruggens, North-West police said on Saturday.
Captain Adele Myburgh said the incident took place around 3pm on
Thursday. The father and son were arrested on Saturday afternoon.
The first 58-year-old man went to the farm to discuss the sale of
geese with the farmer. The farmer was not home and the man spoke to an
elderly woman at the house.
While the man was talking to the woman the father and his son,
thought to be visiting the farm, allegedly started to assault him.
The father and son allegedly kicked and hit the man so severely that
they broke his left arm.
The other 58-year-old man arrived to discuss the sale or purchase of
a cow. When he arrived the other 58-year-old managed to escape.
The two men then allegedly started to assault the second man. He
managed to fend off his
attackers and got into his bakkie and drove
away.
The man who broke his arm was taken to hospital for treatment. He
was released from hospital on Saturday.
When asked whether the incident was a racist attack, because the two
58-year-old men were black and the father and son white, Myburgh said
police could not confirm this and that the two alleged attackers had
been under the influence of alcohol at the time.
The father and son would appear before the Swartruggens Magistrate's
Court on Monday on charges of assault with intent to do grievous bodily
harm and common assault, said Myburgh.
