At least 43 people were injured on Saturday when a bus went off an embankment outside Stanger, paramedics said.

Netcare 911 spokesperson Chris Botha said the accident took place at 8pm on the R74 outside Stanger.

"A total of 14 people were seriously injured and 29 sustained minor injuries," he said.

Transport officials told Sapa the bus lost control, went off a steep embankment and overturned.

It was unclear what had caused the driver to lose control.
