A six-month-old baby boy — who was kidnapped during a shooting incident in Durban — has been found, police said on Wednesday.

Superintendent Daniela Veldhuizen said the baby was unharmed but that his suspected biological father had killed himself at the scene in Shongweni.

The baby was kidnapped on Sunday night from a home in Mariannhill.

The baby's mother Mashamelani Mchunu (35), and sister Zanele Mchunu (19), were shot dead and their bodies were found by neighbours on Monday.

Veldhuizen, at the time, said: "The bodies were found lying next to each other on a double bed. The mother was shot in the chest and the daughter was shot in the head."

"Only the baby was taken, nothing else," she said.

Police suspected the incident may have been linked to domestic violence.

On Wednesday Veldhuizen told Sapa that the man had been tracked down by police to a bushy area in Shongweni.

"When he saw police, he shot himself and died at the scene," said Veldhuizen.

The baby has been left in the care of the dead man's parents.
