President Thabo Mbeki has strongly condemned the continuous acts of xenophobia in South Africa, SABC news reported on Thursday.

Mbeki also called on police to act strongly against those guilty of the attacks.

Mbeki's comments come amid growing concern about attacks against foreigners in South Africa.

The president is currently attending an African Development Bank meeting in Maputo, Mozambique.

At least two people were killed and 60 were injured when Alexandra residents attacked immigrants in violent clashes starting on Sunday. There were also attacks on immigrants in Diepsloot.

More than 1000 immigrants were now staying at the Alexandra and Bramley police stations after they were displaced from their homes, the SA Red Cross Society said.
