The Democratic Alliance (DA) will on Monday submit over 1000 written submissions opposing the dissolution of the Scorpions to Parliament's Safety and Security Committee.

Party spokesperson on Safety and Security, Dianne Kohler Barnard would also hand over the names of the tens of thousands of South Africans who had either signed the DA's petition against the disbanding of the unit, or added their names to an SMS petition.

Monday was the final day for public submissions on the National Prosecuting Authority Amendment Bill and the South African Police Services Amendment Bill, which aimed to bring about the Directorate of Special Operations' (Scorpions) integration with the SAPS.

Business Day reported on Friday that President Thabo Mbeki had withdrawn his opposition to a Constitutional Court bid to stop the disbanding of the Scorpions.

But Justice Minister Brigitte Mabandla and Safety and Security Minister Charles Nqakula had however filed papers opposing the bid by Johannesburg businessman Hugh Glenister.

There was "nothing to read" in Mbeki's withdrawal, said presidential spokesperson Mukoni Ratshitanga.

The Constitutional Court was expected to hear Glenister's application on 20 August.

He initially brought the case before the Pretoria High Court in May. It was struck from the roll after the judge said the court did not have sufficient jurisdiction to decide on a separation of powers matter.
