The Pan Africanist Congress (PAC) national congress in Fort Hare, in the Eastern Cape was adjourned following a bomb scare, the SABC reported on Saturday.

The congress was preparing to start with the election of the executive, including the president.

President Letlape Mpahlele was the only nominee so far for the leader's post.

Police from the explosives unit were called in, the SABC reported.

On Friday, there was heavy security at the conference to ensure that members of a disgruntled group led by former party president Clarence Makwetu were denied access to the three-day meeting.

During the congress the party would also honour its late former president Mangaliso Robert Sobukwe and his wife Veronica with lifetime membership.
