A number of fire tankers were on the scene at Sir Lowry's Pass near Somerset West on Thursday morning where a mountain fire which broke out on Wednesday night was still burning.
Authorities said it was difficult to assess the extent of the damage at this stage because an alert was only received late on Wednesday night.
The report said a large part of the fire was burning in inaccessible areas. It may become necessary to resort to using helicopters to water-bomb the area. An assessment would be made on Thursday.
No properties were threatened and no roads were closed in the area.
