Watch out RAV4 — here's the Suzuki SX4 compact crossover.
What's in a name? The 'S' is short for Sporty, while the 'X' refers to the Suzuki's crossover design. And then there's the '4', which doesn't allude to four-wheel drive in the SA market — although the SX4 is sold in all-wheel drive form in some countries.
Available in manual and automatic guises, both models share an identical 2.0-litre engine, and the same level of standard equipment.
In performance terms, the SX4's 1995cc four-cylinder engine develops 107kW of power at 5800rpm with a torque figure of 184Nm at 3500rpm. Aiding the driving characteristics, the flat torque curve is biased towards the low-to-mid rev range to enhance driving in everyday conditions.
In the case of the manual derivative, acceleration from 0-100km/h is achieved in a claimed 9.4 seconds, with a corresponding top speed of 184km/h. Fuel consumption is 8.4l/100km.
But there's a lot more to a car than the engine. From a driving comfort and convenience point of view, the SX4 features electric power steering, electrically operated windows (with auto-down in front), electric mirror adjustment, climate control air-conditioning with pollen filter, as well as cruise control — the latter operated from buttons on the leather-trimmed and height-adjustable three-spoke steering wheel.
Satellite controls are also provided for the audio system that comprises eight speakers powered by an in-dash single-disc CD receiver that is MP3-compatible and has an audio input for personal music devices.
The SX4 is equipped with Suzuki's "SmartPass Keyless Entry and Start" system, which allows the car to be locked, unlocked and started while the key remains in the driver's pocket or purse. The feature is also linked to the car's factory-fitted alarm, immobiliser and central locking functions.
Red instrument illumination adds to the SX4's sporty character, with the effect carried through to the centre information display for the clock, outside temperature and fuel consumption readings.
Designed to accommodate a family of five, or four adults, the car features rear seats positioned slightly higher than those in the front, while the height of the seats is complemented by the large door openings and a high 175mm ground clearance to facilitate ease of entry and exit for occupants.
Keeping those occupants safe are the standard dual front, side and curtain airbags, along with Isofix child seat mounting points. Braking duties are handled by an all-disc set-up incorporating ABS anti-lock brakes with Electronic Brake Force Distribution (EBD) and Brake Assist.
Peace of mind extends to after-sales care. The Suzuki Complete package encompasses a six-year/90 000 km service plan, three-year/100 000 warranty, three-year roadside assistance and the fitment of an Altech Netstar Sleuth tracking unit as standard.
