The compact car segment gets a new challenger: the Suzuki Swift.
"We knew right from the start of this project that we wanted the Swift to be a totally new kind of compact car," explains Eijj Mochizuki of Suzuki.
"The challenges were huge, as we needed to develop a totally new platform. We spent months in Europe working on the styling and handling, and we even had to devise new systems for component development. But the rewards have been just as great."
Three models will be offered at launch, all powered by a 1.5-litre four-cylinder multi-point fuel-injected engine employing variable valve timing (VVT). Maximum power output is a claimed 74kW at 6000rpm, complemented by a peak torque figure of 133Nm at 4000rpm.
With a basic kerb weight of 980kg, this is sufficient to propel the 3755mm Swift from 0-100km/h in 10 second in the case of the five-speed manual derivative (available in GL and GLS specification). With the optional four-speed automatic transmission, the acceleration figure comes to 11.7 seconds.
Top speeds are 175km/h and 170km/h for the manual and automatic models respectively.
It is credited with a combined-cycle fuel consumption figure of just 6.1l/100km, typically allowing a driving range in excess of 600km from the 43-litre fuel tank capacity. The automatic model's fuel consumption figure comes to 6.5l/100km.
The engine is fully Euro 4 emissions standard compliant, with a C02 emissions rating of 151g/km for the manual model, and 160g/km for the automatic version.
So, with identical engines across the range, what distinguishes the various models? The entry-level 1.5 GL features power steering with tilt adjustment for the steering wheel, electric windows all round, electrically-operated mirrors, as well as remote control operation for the integrated central locking, the factory-fitted alarm and the immobiliser system.
Air-conditioning is standard, along with a pollen filter, while the GL trim incorporates a pre-installed antenna and wired four-speaker system. A CD receiver can be fitted as an aftermarket option at additional cost.
The instrumentation comprises an integrated dashboard-mounted information display that includes a digital clock, outside temperature gauge and fuel consumption readout.
On the practicality front, the interior incorporates cup holders front and rear, fore and aft adjustment for the front seats, and a rear bench seat that is split 60/40 and can be folded down to enlarge the cargo compartment from 213 litres to 562 litres. Aiding easy access to the boot area, the tailgate can be unlocked electronically at the push of a button in the handle. A remote release for the fuel filler flap is also provided.
All versions are fitted with 15-inch wheel and tyre combinations in standard guise. The 5.5Jx15 steel rims on the GL versions are adorned with full wheel caps, and fitted with 185/60 R15 rubber. On GLS models, 5,5Jx15 alloy wheels are standard, while the 185/60 R15 radial tyres remain unchanged.
The more luxurious GLS specification, available in both five-speed manual and four-speed automatic models, adds a superior six-speaker audio system, fully integrated into the centre console of the instrument panel. This unit boasts a CD and MP3-compatible CD tuner with speed-sensing volume adjustment, as well as satellite controls located on the sporty three-spoke steering wheel.
In the case of the GLS, the steering wheel is leather-trimmed, compared to the standard urethane version on the GL.
Further differentiating features comprise front fog lights, while the safety package is boosted with the fitment of side and curtain airbags, in addition to the basic dual front airbags of the GL.
Speaking safety, occupants are shielded from impact forces by a collapsible steering column, leg injury-mitigating brake and clutch pedals, front seatbelt pre-tensioners and force limiters. Isofix child seat anchorage points and tethers on the rear seats come standard, along with child-proof rear door locks.
All Swift models are covered by a three-year/100 000km warranty and a four-year/60 000km service plan.
Suzuki also provides a three-year roadside assistance package that includes medical rescue services, and all Suzuki Swift models come equipped with a Netstar Sleuth tracking device, which can be activated at an optional, monthly fee.
