The ING Renault F1 Team returns to the streets of Sandton, Johannesburg on Sunday, 27 July 2008 for another session of city-centre motor racing demonstrations.
On Roadshow day, first up on the grid in the cockpit of the Renault R27 F1 race is Nelson Piquet, ING Renault F1 Team driver. Lucas DiGrassi, the team’s third driver, takes over the controls later in the day and both drivers are expected to reach speeds of up to 270km/h as Fredman Drive and West Street reverberate to the sound of the racer's 19 000rpm engine.
Fans will also get to see the duo at a more realistic speed when they are chauffeured around the circuit in a convertible.
A capacity crowd of over 80 000 turned out to watch the 2007 event and attendance at this year’s Roadshow is expected to top this figure.
So while the circuit officially opens at 10.30am, it's advisable to get to Sandton early for the best viewing positions. The day kicks off with a number of support acts including karting, and at regular intervals throughout the remainder of the day there's action courtesy of Renault’s Mégane Class T Production Car, Mégane Trophy car as well as two Formula Renault cars.
The official opening of the GPG Renault F1 Team Roadshow is scheduled for 11.15am with the action due to continue through to 3.30pm. The entertainment line-up includes Soweto-born opera singer Sibongile Mngoma, the French choir, two local marching bands and drum majorettes while with the Azuma Cultural Group and Lesedi Cultural Village dance troupe provide a touch of local fare and flair.
But for most punters it's about the on-track action. Apart from the F1 cars, top international stunt driver Terry Grant is expected to thrill with his dare-devil, high speed antics and Ultimate Car Control performances both inside and outside of his car.
Also expected on track is professional stuntman Julien Piguet, who has performed in movies such as 'The Bourne Identity', 'Ronin' and the James Bond series. He will perform several stunt sequences behind the wheel of the Renault Mégane RS and Mégane Trophy.
The Expo Village and Paddock area on Nelson Mandela Square will be open from Friday 25 July, giving you the chance to view the technical set-up of a Formula 1 paddock area complete with two Renault R27 F1 race cars and a full technical crew. At intervals between Friday and Sunday, you have the opportunity to hear and experience the RS27 V8 engine being powered up.
While access to the GPG Renault F1 Team Roadshow is free, due to the demand from a number of F1 fans wanting a bird’s eye on the day, a limited number of grandstands have been erected. Priced at R250 and R300, grandstand tickets are on sale through Computicket.
An international event, since its launch in 2003, the Roadshow has thrilled in excess of two-million people worldwide and for the second year running will be bringing Formula 1 action to the people of South Africa. The event returns to our shores as a result of a strategic partnership between Gauteng’s Department of Economic Development and Renault F1.
A Park & Ride Bus Shuttle service will run at 30 minute intervals between 8am and 1pm on the day. Pick up points will be at Inanda Club, Forrest Road, Sandton, the Wanderers Club, North Road, Illovo and Sandown High School.
Drop off points will be in West Street and the corner of Fredman Drive and Rivonia Road and return services to the pick up points will operate between 3pm and 5pm.
Fredman Drive and West Street will be closed from 8pm on Friday 25 July through to Monday 28 July at 6am. Partial road closures will also affect Alice and Gwen Lanes and Maude and Bute Streets in the Sandton CBD during this period.
In the days leading up to the event, various road closures will also come into effect in the outer lane of Fredman Drive and West Street but cross roads will be accessible and control flows will be indicated along various sections en route.
