Toyota has come out top in three categories in the 2004 Australian Overlander Magazine Awards.

The petrol-powered Land Cruiser 100 Series, petrol Prado and turbo-diesel Hilux all scooped gold awards in their class. Toyota's all-wheel drive Kluger was runner-up in the class won by Prado.

Overlander is Australia's longest running 4X4 magazine and the testing procedure for its annual four-wheel drive awards is rigorous and tough. A jury of a number of journalists from leading automotive and economic publications, newspapers and magazines are involved in the selection process and vehicles are tested over all types of terrain, covering more than 3000km in a week.

In choosing the Land Cruiser in the large wagon petrol class, the judges praised the Cruiser's engine. "Superb refinement and creamy smoothness are reminders of its Lexus origins while plenty of bottom-end and mid-range torque makes for easy and relaxed driving," said Overlander road tester Fraser Stronach.

Acclaimed for its versatility, the judging panel described the Prado as the perfect medium-sized petrol wagon suitable for everything from playing mom's taxi to scrambling up a steep trail or going on a bush safari.

South Africa's top-selling one-tonner is clearly an Australian favourite as well. The double-cab turbo-diesel Hilux impressed judges with its class-leading on-road refinement and off-road ability. Celebrating its 35th year in the South African bakkie market, the Hilux remains the market segment leader and was also voted 2004 Bakkie of the Year by South Africa's Bakkie Magazine earlier this year.
