The S.Pellegrino World's 50 Best Restaurants is recognised around the world as the most credible indicator of the best places to eat on earth.
Unveiled at a special event at the Freemason’s Hall in London on 21 April, and attended by some of the world's greatest chefs and restaurateurs, the 2008 list represents the collation of nearly 3410 votes from the Academy judges throughout the world.
The list stimulates fervent debate and sometimes controversy, but the excitement it generates amongst those who aspire to make the list, and the massive interest it brings to the restaurant industry in general, have seen it grow into an eagerly anticipated, internationally influential event.
The list is compiled by The Nespresso World's 50 Best Academy, a group of prominent food writers, critics, publishers and commentators, who each represent a different global region and chair a carefully selected voting panel for that region.
SA's own gem
And at the number 50 is South Africa's very own, Le Quartier Francais, which was also awarded the honour: 'Best in Middle East and Africa'.
At the foot of the Franschhoek Mountains, the beautiful setting of boutique hotel Le Quartier Francais is matched only by the sublime food that emerges from the forward-thinking kitchen of its flagship restaurant, The Tasting Room.
Offering a four-, six- or eight-course option, Margot Janse's constantly evolving culinary creations include the likes of Foie Gras and Sultana Mousse with Pain D'épice Brioche, Rhubarb and Beetroot Jelly, or Vichyssoise and Norwegian Salmon Terrine with Fennel Marmalade.
"If there's a special something behind the success of this gem, it must be sheer, unadulterated love. Margot Janse delights with sense-dazzling dishes that taste less conceptual than they appear on paper," reported Eat Out Magazine.
