The animated sci-fi comedy 'WALL-E', about a loveable, anthropomorphic trash compactor with a heart of gold, was the top weekend draw at North American movie theatres, figures showed on Sunday.
The latest offering by Pixar, in which a post-apocalyptic world void of people meets the whimsical humanity of a robot, cleaned up with $62.5-million in ticket sales, according to box office tracker Exhibitor Relations.
In second place, pulling in $51.1-million, was the action-thriller 'Wanted', starring Angelina Jolie as a pouty sharpshooter who lures James McAvoy into a fraternity of assassins.
'Get Smart', a remake of a 1960s television series about the misadventures of bumbling US secret Agent Maxwell Smart, came in third with $20-million after topping the charts last weekend.
Tackling fourth place was 'Kung Fu Panda', the animated adventures of a kindly panda forced to become a martial-arts master to save his jungle from leopard villains. The film took in $11.7-million at the weekend.
'The Incredible Hulk', starring Edward Norton as the Marvel Comics superhero who you wouldn't like when he's angry, was fifth with $9.2-million.
Claiming sixth place with $5.4-million was 'The Love Guru', a gag-laden comedy starring Mike Myers as a bearded self-help Indian swami.
Seventh place went to 'Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull', with $5.0-million for a total domestic take just a few thousand short of $300-million.
'The Happening', the latest offering from acclaimed mystery-horror director M. Night Shyamalan, came in eighth with $3.8-million.
The silver-screen version of the television hit 'Sex and the City' took ninth place, with a weekend gross of $3.8-million.
Rounding out the top 10 was the Adam Sandler comedy 'You Don't Mess with the Zohan', which earned $3.2-million in ticket sales.
