It's always refreshing to listen to some hot new talent in the music industry. As much as Australian born Sam Sparro's debut album is not mindblowing, it is unique and bound to get a lot of appreciation.
Chilled out, the collection is filled with electronica/dance tracks which are gracefully complemented by his deep soulful baritone voice. He almost sounds like a cross between Prince and Tunde Baiyewu of the Lighthouse Family.
As ever, it's all about first impressions and this collection doesn't disappoint. 'Too Many Questions' provides a solid opening but the highlight here simply has to be hit single 'Black And Gold'. Debuting on the UK charts at number two, amid fierce competition from the likes of Estelle and Madonna, the song is made all the more remarkable since it was written during a personal low point while he was working at a coffee shop in Los Angeles.
But this kid is no one-trick pony: 'Cottonmouth', '21st Century Life', 'Hot Mess' and 'Sally' are all equally impressive blends of soul, dance, electrofunk and house.
Expect Sparro to dominate the nightclub scenes.
