The sales pitch on 'The Brothers Solomon' DVD is: 'Dumb and Dumber' meets 'Knocked Up'. Well, it is absolutely nothing like the latter. The word dumb does, however, come to mind.
At least 173 times, in what is arguably the longest 90 minutes since Eddie Murphy donned his fat suit in 'Norbit'.
The 'comedy' revolves around the socially inept Solomon Brothers (Will Forte and Will Arnett) trying to get laid. Ah, now there's a novel concept. Clearly a director who likes to push boundaries, Bob Odenkirk has made sure that this film is like no other by making the heroes a little creepy. As hard as they seem to be trying, they are neither endearing nor entertaining.
But that's okay, because the premise of the movie is just so darn funny. When the brothers discover that their father's (a comatose Lee Majors) dying wish is to have a grandchild, they set about trying to impregnate a woman. Any woman.
The only problem (apparently) with this ingenious plan is that the brothers — who were raised in isolation in the North Pole — are complete social (and I suspect mental) retards. After numerous failed encounters with women, they eventually pay the cash-strapped Janine (Kristen Wiig) to become a surrogate mother for their child. And with this comes a barrage of unfunny sperm, sex and baby jokes.
Oh, there is also an incredibly hot neighbour (Malin Akerman), who is no doubt included as a bonus feature for all those pubescent boys who find idiocy entertaining.
Extras
The bonus features offer surprising depth. Okay, fine, I'm being facetious, but there is at least one scene worth watching. Skip over the usual back-patting behind the scenes stuff and check out the deleted scenes. The one with the 'baby' sitting on a stove surrounded by a stack of knives is really the only scene worth watching on the DVD. Deleted or otherwise.
