This is one of those movies most people will take one look at in the DVD rental store and then move along.
For others, this is the reason for the existence of DVD rental stores in the first place — a fringe movie of dubious quality that still tickles your interest in a most macabre fashion but doesn't justify spending R40 on at the cinema. A R10 rental, on the other hand, is considered fair.
And then you'll get movie-fans who live for this kind of B-rated, slapstick humour.
All of these groups will find ample reasons to skip, rent, steal or drive their way through, over or around 'Balls of Fury'.
The story is one that comes straight from the B-movie playbook, but admittedly that's on purpose: former ping-pong wunderkind, Randy Daytona (Dan Fogler), has fallen very far from his youthful glory. FBI agent Ernie Rodriguez (George Lopez) lures him out of his mediocrity to take part in an underground ping-pong tournament to help catch his father's killer, Feng (brilliantly played by Christopher Walken). And along the way a gorgeous girl (Maggie Q) falls for him. Obviously.
Reasons to buy it
Although the slapstick humour is not nearly on the same level as that found in the likes of classics 'Zoolander' and 'Nacho Libre', there are still moments that truly shine.
These moments almost exclusively belong to Christopher Walken and Thomas Lennon (who plays Daytona's arch-rival Karl Wolfschtagg). Walken is simply superb in his usual understated way as the almost likeable evil mastermind Feng, while Lennon's portrayal of crazy German ping-pong champ Wolfschtagg is so over the top that one cannot help but break into giggles, if not rolling on the floor in a fit.
And then, if you're a fan of '80s rock maestros Def Leppard, you'll simply love the soundtrack!
Reasons to ignore it
OK, obviously if you don't appreciate slapstick humour, you won't find 'Balls of Fury' amusing. So just move along.
But, even if you are a slapstick fan, 'Balls of Glory' is definitely not the best example out there. It doesn't even come within spitting distance of cult status, as some of the jokes are a little too obvious.
Reasons to rent it
Simply put: Walken and Lennon. And as lame as some of the jokes might be, others are really, really good.
Reasons to hang it from your rear-view mirror
Nope, sorry, I can't think of one reason that would justify you hanging any DVD / CD / sparkly-thing-used-to-store-data-on from your car's rear view mirror.
Wait... no... just say no.
