A BEAUTIFUL MIND
A beautiful film!
Posted Thu, 14 Mar 2002

Scooping up a mighty handful of Oscars at this year's Academy Awards, including Best Film, "A Beautiful Mind" features hunky Aussie Oscar winner (but alas, not this year) Russel Crowe taking on the role of a brilliant, genius mathematician who becomes, well, a little crazy.

No, seriously, it's actually an extremely touching account - a real life human drama - of triumph over tragedy.

Loosely based on the acclaimed biography written by Sylvia Nasar, the film, directed by Ron Howard, follows the life of eccentric and, er, good looking mathematician, John Forbes Nash.

Nash, who still pursues his mathematical work, is considered to be a living legend. But for decades before he finally won the recognition he deserved - he received the Nobel Prize in 1994 - he endured untold hardship due to debilitating mental illness, which the film compellingly dramatises.

Without giving too much away, the story goes thus. While still a student, a young, socially awkward but extremely competitive young Nash makes an astonishing discovery. He is close to achieving international acclaim, but he develops schizophrenia, which is belatedly diagnosed.

Fortunately for him, as a student he'd made the aquaintance of the gorgeous Alicia (Jennifer Connelly, who won a Golden Globe for her performance), who becomes his enduringly devoted wife.

It's partly thanks to her love and support that Nash is able to fight back and make a recovery where the lives of so many other people with this debilitating illness have been destroyed.

Crowe delivers a strong performance, and has real chemistry with Connelly. The two make the film's story about the power of love believable and moving.

Yes, you can be sure that gallons of tears will have been shed by the end of "A Beautiful Mind", so don't forget the Kleenex!
