AUSTIN POWERS IN GOLDMEMBER
Yeah baby, Austin’s back!
Posted Thu, 08 Aug 2002

Just when you thought the word "shagadelic" was fading into movie obscurity, that cultural icon totally lacking in taste is back! And living up to his previous two Austin Powers releases, the international man of mystery delivers an energetic frolic featuring star cameos, dancing in the streets, absurd humour and every conceivable joke on bodily functions imaginable.

'Austin Powers in Goldmember' opens countrywide on Friday, August 9, three years since the spoof spy and his wacky band of characters saved the world from the hands of Dr Evil and his dwarf clone, Mini Me.

But as Austin discovers, you can never keep a good nemesis down and in the latest, and reportedly last, Austin Powers offering, these two characters escape from prison with their latest plan to take over the world. Sound familiar?

But this time they enlist the help of Goldmember, a decidedly Bond-like character, also played by Myers, and hatch a time travel scheme in an attempt to take the entire Earth hostage.

Our hero Austin has to travel back in time to rescue his father, played by Michael Caine, who shines as a 1970s spy, and return in time to save the world.

It’s fast-paced, energetic fun, even if the jokes are continually repeated and become tedious as it tries to outdo the previous two movies, getting increasingly absurd.

The same motley crew of characters pop up, most of them played by Myers himself, but ably assisted by Caine, Destiny’s Child singer Beyoncé Knowles and Fred Savage, star of television’s “The Wonder Years”.

If you liked the previous two offerings, you’ll enjoy the same brand of toilet humour, but if you didn’t buy into the swinging spy spoof before, it's unlikely it’ll do anything for you this time round.

What the international critics are saying:

"...Myers has turned his franchise into the movie version of an adolescent dirty-joke book done up in post-Tarantino pop-culture riffs..."
- Sean Axmaker, SEATTLE POST-INTELLIGENCER

"Some of the most inventive silliness you are likely to witness in a movie theatre for some time."
- Liz Braun, JAM! MOVIES

"This multimillion dollar franchise has become somewhat tiresome... rather like an ageing uncle who insists upon telling the same stories every time he visits."
- Michael Elliott, MOVIE PARABLES

"Delivers more than its fair share of saucy hilarity."
- Neil Smith, BBC NEWS
