I know I often try to remind you that celebs have troubles, too — just like ordinary people. Except that sometimes their lives are all fairytale-y and perfect, and you just can't help hating them.
Scarlett Johansson has now officially achieved hate-worthy status. Getting engaged to the gorgeous Ryan Reynolds kind of has that effect. Sorry, Scarlett. The only little down for Johansson was that she had to show off her big, sparkly ring all alone at the New York Metropolitan Museum's annual Costume Institute Gala, as Ryan was off filming a movie. Still, the congratulations flowed in thick and fast, so it can't have been too bad.
"I just heard. I'm really happy for her," enthused Scarlett's close personal designer friend, Marc Jacob. "She's a great girl. I just think Scarlett is great and I hope she is very, very happy. She's super funny; I love a smart, ballsy, New Yorker and that's what she is. I wish her the best." And Johansson's 'Lost in Translation' director Sophia Coppola was also quick with the well wishing: " Wow, congratulations to her!"
No happy boy-story for Cameron Diaz, though — sadly. She's not that sure about the whole perfect guy thing any more...
"You're always told he has to look like this and this is how he exists in all the storybooks — but it doesn't always come in those packages. And people are not always what they seem to be," muses Diaz. "I was really a big fairytale girl when I was growing up."
But fairytales don't tend to be the very best guide to romance in real life.
Speaking of all things super-real and genuine — heeeere's Tom! Tom Cruise has just launched the uber-self-congratulatory TomCruise.com site, which he tells us is a big ol' display of thanks to his millions of adoring fans. Man, that's so sweet of him to post over-blown descriptions of his movie genuis on the internet. Nothing says 'thanks' like one's resume.
"In celebration of this occasion," says Tom (referring to the 25-year anniversary of his first starring movie role), "and my 27 years of making movies, I created this site as a thank you, to you, for sharing the journey with me and to invite you to continue to explore what the future will bring... My hope with this site is to bring you in and share with you the fun I experience every day during the filmmaking process, from working on the script, to the making of the film, through to what we finally see when we settle into our seats and the lights go down."
The excitement — it's palpable.
Now while TomKat and Posh and Becks assure us that they're all still super good friends, it's good to know that Victoria and David Beckham have made another celeb friend. And this one doesn't believe that we're all possessed by the souls of long-dead aliens.
Posh and Becks met George Clooney the same way so many of us met our friends — while all hitching a ride together to the Costume Institute Gala on Giorgio Armani's private jet. Apparently, what bonded the Beckhams and Mr Clooney was a shared appreciation of good humour.
"He totally digs Victoria's dry, very British sense of humour and gets her jokes, which a lot of Americans don't," claims an insider. I can understand just why Victoria would lap that up — unfortunately, dry humour really doesn't seem to be very high up there on the American humour scale.
One thing that should be very high up on everyone's damn-good-idea scale is snogging Johnny Depp. How could that not be a good plan?
Not many people get to try that, though. But Keira Knightley is one exception — lucky bastard. Not that she really appreciated her good fortune when she initially got her 'Pirates of the Caribbean' gig. "Gosh, I was just a teenager and you can imagine it was the most embarrassing thing telling my mates I was about to be in a movie based on a Disney theme-park ride. I mean it was really embarrassing and we all thought it was going to be total s..t anyway," Knightley recently revealed.
"But then suddenly I was kissing Johnny Depp and Orlando Bloom and bang, there you go, instant bloody stardom."
Oh, right — let's not forget that she was paid a lot of money and got hugely famous kissing Johnny. As if it weren't reward enough in itself...
