A mineworker was killed at Impala Platinum's Rustenburg mine, the National Union of Mineworkers said on Wednesday.

The death occurred on Tuesday night, the union said.

The company's spokesperson Alice Lourens said: "There was a fatality on Tuesday at our Rustenburg operations. It is being investigated by the company as well as the Department of Minerals and Energy".

She added that the accident was caused by a fall of ground. No part of the mine had been closed.
