The Democratic Alliance will question parliament on why South Africans have to pay more for electricity than neighbouring countries, a party spokesperson said on Wednesday.
"(Electricity) exports to neighbouring countries increased while South Africans have been forced to contend with crippling rolling blackouts, power rationing and load shedding - but Eskom has also provided less electricity to South Africans," said DA spokesperson and MP Manie Van Dyk.
"As such the DA has submitted parliamentary questions to Public enterprises minister Alec Erwin to determine whether neighbouring countries are in fact receiving preferential treatment," he said.
In the three months to March, electricity exports rose as much as 6.1 percent year-on-year, while electricity distributed to the nine provinces fell by 1.7 percent, said Statistics SA on Wednesday.
These facts, said Van Dyk, cast serious doubt on the minister's statements in February that all Eskom customers were subject to "similar restrictions" and limitations on all exports sales.
